ANC Diamond STEP Award 2015

BARGERSVILLE, IN — The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Indiana/Kentucky recently awarded CMS Corporation (CMS) Awards of Excellence for two design-build projects constructed for the US military. The Design-Build Repair of Bachelors Quarters (BQ) 846 at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida and the Design-Build of HVAC and Air Conditioning Systems Upgrades at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, were recognized by ABC for excelling in “innovation, quality, communication, and safety.”

The Award of Excellence honors the skill and creativity of the entire project team – contractor, owner, architect, and engineer – responsible for an outstanding merit shop construction project. CMS’s $5.7M design-build repair of BQ 846 received the Award of Excellence in the “Institutional $3M to $10M Category.” CMS renovated an existing bachelor housing complex consisting of eight 3-story wings and one 2-story wing (over 94,800 SF total). Work included repair of the exterior building envelop, replacement of mechanical systems, new finishes and painting, bathroom upgrades, and building security and key card access features. By recommending that phases of work be performed concurrently, CMS was able to complete the project ahead of schedule. This project received exceptional performance ratings from the client. The Navy cited CMS’s expert ability to manage its subcontractors, scheduling expertise, and exceptional communication skills as key to completing the project ahead of schedule and with superb quality. What was anticipated to be a burdensome project due to the age and use of the facility, as well as its size and magnitude, was “executed with precision and foresight.”

In the “Historical Renovation $3M to $10M Category,” CMS replaced existing control systems with a new direct digital control system for the central HVAC equipment and chiller plant at the Marine Corps Base at Kaneohe Bay, integrating it into the Base’s Energy Management Control System (EMCS). Associated work included installing new supply and return air ducts, replacing damper actuators on VAV boxes, and replacing flex ducts. This $4.4M project received exceptional ratings from the client. The work was completed ahead of schedule and performed with zero OSHA-recordable incidents. The Navy cited CMS’s excellent communications and ability to provide “no-cost solutions to provide a better design and end product’ as key to the success of this project.

CMS was also named a Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) Winner – Diamond Level – at the awards ceremony. The STEP Award is presented to firms that possess exceptional safety records and make safety a core value, as evidenced by leadership commitment, safety culture, and rigorous employee training programs. With the Diamond Level designation, CMS is now eligible for the ABC National Safety Excellence Award.

Ernest Enrique, PE, CEO and Khush Mander, Executive Vice President, both of CMS, were on hand to accept these awards at the ABC 2015 Merit Shop Awards Gala on September 24, 2015 in downtown Indianapolis, IN.
