Maumee, OH – CMS Corporation’s (CMS) Convert Hangar 6 to Program Executive Offices (PEO) project at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), OH, has won an Engineering News Record (ENR) Midwest 2022 Best Projects Award in the Renovation/Restoration category. CMS’ construction management expertise, paired with ASI’s architecture design and engineering, combined to transform a World War II-era hangar into a state-of-the-art office space created to best serve the Air Force’s modern mission.
CMS renovated 37,350 SF of existing space, essentially constructing a stand-alone 2-story building within the footprint of the existing hangar, bringing the PEO facility total to approx. 63,000 SF. Historical preservation considerations were paramount because the hangar, a contributing structure to the Wright Field Historic District, is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Design and construction met well-defined military security, sustainability, and anti-terrorism requirements. The converted hangar now provides a highly functional, secure, and state-of-the-art building supporting WPAFB missions.
The 64 projects entered into the ENR Midwest competition were reviewed by a panel of construction, engineering, and architecture experts to select the 13 Best Projects. CMS Chairman and CEO, Ernest Enrique, PE, noted, “This award-winning project was successful on all levels and is the result of a true partnership between the CMS-led design-build team and our Air Force client. We are extremely proud of this project and thankful for the recognition by ENR.”
