CMS Project Receives ABC Award of Excellence

BARGERSVILLE, IN — The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Indiana/Kentucky recently awarded CMS Corporation (CMS) the 2017 Award of Excellence in the “Federal Government Over $10M” Division for a $27.1M design-build project to recapitalize deep draft berthing Wharf Charlie 2 (C-2) at Naval Station (NS) Mayport, FL. CMS was recognized by ABC for excelling in “innovation, quality, communication, and safety” on this project.

The Award of Excellence honors the skill and creativity of the entire project team – contractor, owner, architect, and engineer – responsible for an outstanding merit shop construction project. CMS constructed a new steel bulkhead and fuel delivery system at the existing Wharf C-2, successfully navigating a number of unique challenges along the way, including extensive dewatering of excavations of 10 to 20 feet below sea level, working at heights over water, and heavy rigging (including crane work from landside over water and from barge over water).

CEO Ernest Enrique noted, “Despite the many challenges of this high hazard project, the CMS project team worked 157,000 labor hours with zero lost-time incidents. For example, we performed over 2,000 crane lifts (including nearly 500 critical lifts) without incident. Overall, our successful completion of this project has extended the service life of the wharf bulkhead by an additional 50 years.”

In addition to the Award of Excellence, CMS was also recognized as an ABC Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) winner at the Platinum Level. The program recognizes the efforts of firms that consistently strive to achieve effective, best safety practices on jobsites and provides contractors with a tool to objectively evaluate their safety programs, policies, and procedures.

Ernest Enrique, CEO, and Mercedes Enrique, President, were on hand to accept the award at the ABC 2017 Merit Shop Construction Awards Gala on September 28, 2017 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in downtown Indianapolis, IN.
