BLOOMINGTON, IN — CMS was a proud sponsor and participant in the second annual Bloomington Global Youth Service Day. President Mercedes Enrique spent the day as an Adult Leader Volunteer in the mural painting activity. The service day, held April 26, was hosted by the Monroe County Youth Council (MCYC), along with partners Asset Building Coalition, United Way of Monroe County, The Bloomington Volunteer Network, The Warehouse, and Youth Service America.
Global Youth Service Day, established by Youth Service America in 1988, is the
largest service event in the world, and is celebrated annually in over 100
countries. Over 250 students from Bloomington and Ellettsville high schools
chose to spend their day working on one of 12 local community service projects,
including repairing bicycles, picking up trash along a recreational trail, painting a
mural for a community center, and planting trees at a local park. The event encourages local improvement and youth empowerment, creating a dynamic environment where students can share their interests and make new connections while making a difference.
Rebecca Garcia, Co-President of the MCYC, spoke for the organizers, “We are very excited to have the opportunity to create this event. A youth council with 30 members can do some things, but we really wanted to create something that all of the community could participate in.”
