Iwakuni Construction Bulk Storage Tanks Ph1

Location: Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), Iwakuni, Japan

Client: US Marine Corps

Value: $60M

Highlights

  • New construction of an aboveground fuel tank with containment and modern transfer systems
  • Demolition of 3 tanks and installation of full utility and site infrastructure upgrades

CMS K.K., in a joint venture with Obayashi, was awarded a MILCON project to demolish three existing fuel tanks at MCAS Iwakuni and to construct a new aboveground jet fuel storage tank with full containment and system integrations. The scope of work includes heavy demolition, extensive environmental remediation and deep soil mixing, construction of a new tank containment, tank erection and coating, and installation of new transfer piping, valves, manifolds, electrical devices, controls, and related appurtenances to connect the new tank to the existing fuel system.

The project entails the demolition of three aging 10,000-barrel (BBL) aboveground tanks, along with their secondary containment systems and associated piping and equipment. CMS will then field construct a new 71,400-BBL (nom) jet fuel tank at the location of the demolished tanks. To ensure structural integrity, the project will incorporate deep soil mixing (auger-cast and jetted) foundations to improve the site’s soil bearing capacity. Comprehensive civil, mechanical, and electrical utility work will be completed, including automatic tank gauging, EFSO and PLC integrations, lighting, communications, cathodic protection, and work on water and fire protection systems. Site improvements such as drainage, access roads, pavements, sidewalks, fences, and landscaping will also be provided.
